Emilio Gago-Ribas was born in La Bañeza (León), Spain in 1964. He received both the M.S. and the Ph.D. degrees in Telecommunication Engineering from the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, in 1988 and 1990, respectively.

He joined the Radiation Group of the Polytechnic University of Madrid, Spain, in 1986, where he worked in numerical methods and signal processing techniques (CGM-FFT methods) applied to different electromagnetic problems under the supervision of Prof. M. F. Cátedra Pérez. In November 1991 he received the Extraordinary Doctorate Prize from the Polytechnic University of Madrid corresponding to the course 1989-1990.

From March 1991 to August 1991 he joined a research group at the Center for Electromagnetic Research at Northeastern University, Boston, MA, and from September, 1991 to February 1993 another research group at Weber Research Institute at Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, NY, both as a Postdoctoral Researcher and both headed by Prof. Leopold B. Felsen and supported by a postdoctoral grant from the Spanish Education Ministry. His research activities in this period focused on the application of asymptotic techniques to different EM scattering problems, setting up the basis for the high-frequency analysis of periodic structures as may be seen in "Ray Theory for Scattering by Two-Dimensional Quasiperiodic Plane Finite Arrays" (IEEE Transaction on Antennas and Propagation, Vol. 44, No. 3, pp. 375-382, March 1996).

In 1994 he became Associated Professor; from 1994 to September, 2003 he was at the Department of Signal Theory, Communication and Telematics Engineering at the University of Valladolid, Spain, and in October, 2003 he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Oviedo where he currently carries out his educational and research activities.

Also, he has visited other research centers as a visiting professor: (i) the Electrical and Electronic Faculty at Istanbul Technical University (three weeks in 1996 and one and a half week in 2006) concerning "Wiener-Hopf and Riemman-Hilbert Problems on Inverse Electromagnetics" and "Complex Transmission-Line Analysis"; (ii) Departement MO. Technopole de Brest-Iroise. ENST-Bretagne, Brest, France (two weeks in 2003) concerning "Complex Transmission-Line Analysis"; (iii) Departament of Electrical Engineering, University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy (one week in 2007 and one week in 2009) as a visiting professor under ERASMUS program, the first one concerning "Fundamentals of high frequency ray techniques. Asymptotics for scattering problems: a 2D canonical problem" (undergraduate) and "Complex signal theory in electromagnetics: analysis, some results and future challenges" (PhD), and the second one concerning "Complex variables in transmission line theory" (undergraduate), "Complex variables in transmission line theory: lossy case" (undergraduate) and "Transmission line theory: advanced analysis techniques" (PhD).

His main interests focus on the analytical modeling of direct and inverse wave problems, the generalization of signals and systems theory in both real and complex variables and the connection of this theory with the representation of wave problems in both real and spectral domains (generalization of the Green's function theory in real variable and its "complexified" time-space version).
